The Red Arrows Team News
The Red Arrows airfield, RAF Scampton, saw disabled ex RAF Regiment Gunner Sean Allerton complete his 250th mile of his 500 mile wheelchair challenge. Joined by Red 3, Flight Lieutenant Mike Child, Senior Aircraftsmen engineers Joe Tiley and Ant Pinch and willing members of the RAF Benevolent Fund, the RAF Association and Yorkshire University Air Squadron, he completed a 2 mile route around the taxiways.
Sean’s charity challenge is to accumulate 500 miles in his wheelchair. He said “The challenge is purely my challenge; as soon as I heard that The Proclaimers had become patrons of The Forgotten Heroes I knew that I would have to push myself in my wheelchair 500 miles.” As well as the Forgotten Heroes Charity, the money raised by Sean’s efforts will go to 5 other charities; RAF Association, RAF Benevolent fund, RAF Charitable Trust, Aerobility and Flying Scholarships for Disabled People.
Sean was involved in a motorcycle accident in 1993 whilst riding pillion and was left as a tetraplegic as a result of breaking his neck. This hasn’t stopped him however, and Sean now has a full schedule of fencing, studying with the OU and enjoys computing.
Mike Child, Red 3, said “It’s great that Sean is supporting so many RAF and aviation charities and we’re very happy that he has reached the half way point at the Red Arrows”.
