Sean Allerton’s Push 500 Challenge arrived at RAF Northolt on Tuesday 7 July with the weather threatening to rain – not that that would put him off. Sean, an ex-RAF Regiment gunner, who is wheelchair bound after a motorbike injury in 1993, started the Push 500 challenge in 2012 to give something back to the charities who had supported him following his injury: The RAF Benevolent Fund, RAF Association, RAF Charitable Trust and Flying Scholarships for Disabled People.

Sean is Passionate about the idea behind the Push 500:
NHT-Official-20150707-168-018“The Proclaimers, who support this challenge, would walk 500 miles, but I can’t walk, so I fundraise for the charities that have supported me by completing 500 mile wheelchair challenges. That has taken me well over 1500 miles at RAF bases all over the UK and I’m really pleased that RAF Northolt have accepted to let me continue my challenge here. As well as raising funds, I want people to know how the RAF family really is one huge family. This was brought home to me following my injury, and it’s the support network provided that the RAF and its organisations that has put me in a position where I can take on challenges like this – that support is there for other people too and it’s something that I want people to know about”.

Sean was accompanied by a group of special guests as he made his way around the airfield at Northolt. Most noticeable were Air Chief Marshall Sir Stephen Dalton and TV presenter Johnny Ball. They are both keen supporters of the challenge and competed the complete circuit. There were also guest appearances from personnel from various sections at RAF Northolt who had volunteered to do a guest stint in the wheelchair party. Group Captain Andy Bacon, Northolt’s Station Commander was in the chair for the first leg.

“Sean is an inspiration to us all and I’m delighted that RAF Northolt has been able to support the Push 500 challenge. With the forthcoming challenges at Shawbury and RIAT, Push 500 is going from strength to strength”.
